Why September Is the Best Time to Start Repairing Summer Skin

Your skin can look and feel very different at the end of summer compared with the beginning.

Months of increased UV exposure, warmer temperatures, holidays, air conditioning and changes to your usual routine can all affect how your skin looks and behaves. Often, it isn't until summer starts to come to an end that these changes become much more noticeable.

You might see pigmentation that wasn't as obvious before, increased dehydration, dullness, uneven texture or fine lines that suddenly seem more prominent.

September is a natural opportunity to check in with your skin, understand what has changed and start giving it what it needs for the season ahead.

What happens to your skin during summer?

Summer brings a combination of factors that can affect the skin.

Increased UV exposure can contribute to pigmentation and signs of premature skin ageing, while heat, humidity and air conditioning can all influence hydration levels and the skin barrier. Holidays and changes to our normal routines can also mean we're not always as consistent with our skincare as we might be at other times of the year.

Even if you've been diligent with SPF and looked after your skin throughout the summer, you may still notice changes as the season comes to an end.

This doesn't necessarily mean you've done anything wrong. Our skin is constantly responding to its environment, which is exactly why I don't believe in following the same skincare and treatment plan all year round.

What should you focus on in September?

The goal isn't to try to undo an entire summer overnight.

Instead, September is a good time to reassess your skin and identify the concerns that would benefit most from attention.

For some people, that might mean focusing on hydration and strengthening the skin barrier. For others, pigmentation, uneven texture, fine lines or loss of firmness may be the priority.

Your skincare routine may also need adjusting as we move towards cooler weather. Products that worked perfectly for you during summer may not necessarily give your skin everything it needs during autumn and winter.

A consultation allows us to look at your skin as it is now, talk through any changes you've noticed and create a personalised plan using the treatments and skincare that are most appropriate for you.

Why autumn is a great time to focus on skin quality

September is also the beginning of a really useful treatment window.

Rather than waiting until you want to see a difference in your skin, starting now gives us time to work progressively on concerns such as pigmentation, texture, fine lines and overall skin quality.

Many of the treatments I recommend are designed to support processes within the skin, including collagen production and regeneration. These changes don't happen overnight, so thinking ahead can be an important part of achieving the best possible results.

Could NeoGen be part of your autumn skin plan?

One treatment I particularly love at this time of year is NeoGen.

NeoGen uses nitrogen plasma technology to deliver controlled energy into the skin, supporting regeneration and stimulating collagen production. It can be used as part of a treatment plan for several common concerns, including pigmentation, uneven texture, fine lines and overall skin quality.

One of the reasons NeoGen can be such a valuable treatment is that we aren't simply focusing on one isolated concern. We're working on the overall quality of the skin and encouraging longer-term improvements.

Treatments can also be tailored according to your individual skin, concerns and the level of downtime that works for you.

For clients who have noticed changes following the summer months, September can therefore be a great time to start thinking about a NeoGen treatment plan.

Start with your skin, not the treatment

While there are plenty of treatments available, I will always recommend starting with what your skin actually needs.

You don't need to decide whether you need NeoGen, a skin booster, Profhilo, microneedling or a new skincare routine before you come into clinic. That's what your consultation is for.

We can look at your skin together, discuss what you'd like to improve and create a plan that makes sense for you, your lifestyle and your longer-term skin goals.

If your skin is ready for a post-summer reset, September is the perfect time to start.
